Where did they learn this?

#1: Your butt smells.
#2: Yeah, well...your vagina smells!
#1: Oh yeah, did you smell it?
#2: No! Did you smell my butt?!
#1: No, but I can smell it from here.
#2: Well, I can smell you vagina from here!
Me: You know, this is all going on facebook.
Both: Oh....

Those Mans

D: Where those mans are?
Me: Those mans?
D: Those mans who came.
Me: That man who was here?
D: *sigh* You know what I'm talkin bout. Do you?
Me: The man who's fixing the furnace?
D: Yeah. Are they there still? Or are they already not there?
Me: He you mean. It's just one one guy. He's still here.
D: I thought it's three.
Me: Nope, just one.
D: Why he comed?
Me: Why did he come? To fix the furnace.
D: Why? What is a furnace?
Me: It's the thing that heats the house and the water.
D: That white thing?
Me: Yes.
D: That bottles are there?
Me: Yup.
D: Oh now I know.

Burned

D: Tėtė, will you make me some waffles or should I make them myself?
Me: You can make them.
D: (grumbling on the way to the kitchen) I'm gonna get burned...

No Baby

The children are in charge of the dishes with my supervision, 10 y.o. for sink dishes, 5 y.o. for loading and unloading the dishwasher.

D: I'm tired of unloading the dishwasher.
Me: Well, just hope that we have another baby and wait five years.
D: I'm not gonna wait five years!
Me: Why not?
D: Cause the baby can do it.
Me: You think a baby can load a dishwasher?
D: Yeah, but Mama's not gonna have a baby anyway.
Me: Why not?
D: Cause she's not gonna.
Me: Who told you that?
D: Nobody, I just know.
Me: How do you know?
D: Cause we don't have three beds.
Me: We've got ten beds! Three just in the kids' rooms.
D: What, the baby's gonna go in A's room?
Me: Oh no no, certainly not. You're going to go in A's room and the baby will go in your room, which will henceforth be know as the baby's room
D: Well, but there's a special baby bed. That I slept in. Remember?
Me: Sure, sure, the crib. So the baby sleeps in the crib for a year in our bedroom, then moves to your room and you move to A's room.
D: Well, I'm going to take all my stuff with me!
Me: Okay.
D: And I'm going to take all my things that I like with me too!
Me: Okay.
D: But she's not gonna have a baby anyway.

How come Mama does no work around here?

I come downstairs Saturday morning and everybody's just laying around, wasting the day away. The kitchen is full of dirty dishes, both small (responsibility of the five year old to load into the dish washer, with my supervision) and large (responsibility of the nine year old to wash in the sink, with my supervision). So I tell them both to get up and get to the kitchen, and this conversation ensues (in Lithuanian) once I leave the room:

Daughter #2: why do only we have to work all the time and not you (Mama)?
Mama: cause I work all week, and get you bums ready for school and kindergarten besides that.
Daughter #2: but I work all week too! I have to go to kindergarten.
Daughter #1: at least all you have to do in kindergarten is play, at school I have to work.
Daughter #2: no, I have to sleep too!
Mama: get to work now.
Daughter #2: but why don't you have to work?
Mama: go ask Tėtė.
Daughter #2: I know already, it's because you're his wife.

Why is a duck?

D #1 got her greatest wish, that D #2 take over the dishwasher duty. Little did she know that that means she is promoted to sink duty, i.e. dishes too big for the dish washer, and she now has to supervise D #2's dishwasher loading (as I have to supervise them both). So now D #2's complaining that D #1's telling her what to do.
Me: D #1's gotta tell you what to do.
Her: Why?
Me: Cause I used to do that, then D #1 did and I told her what to do. Now you do it, and she tells you what to do.
Her: But I know how to load it.
Me: You know some stuff, but you don't know everything. And if you don't do it right I'm gonna be mad at D #1.
Her: Why?
Me: Because it's her job to instruct you, just like it's my job to instruct her. That's the hierarchy.
Her: What?
Me: The hierarchy, when people above you tell you how to do your job.
Her: What is hieratchy?
Me: That's when people tell people what to do. At work Mama tells some people what to do, but other people tell Mama what to do, and still others tell those people what to do. That's what "hierarchy" is, more knowledgable people tell you what to do.
Her: But this is a "hat" (pointing, actually, to a basket on her hat).

Stupid Birds

Did you have fun chasing the birds?
Yes, I scared ALL of them!

Friend?

Every day I ask Daughter #2 how her day was, and she tells me about kindergarten, that she went outside and took a nap, what she played, and what she ate. This was the play part of one conversation:

D #2: I played with dolls.
Tete: By yourself or with a friend?
D #2: With my friend.
Tete: Which friend, Pijus?
D #2: No, another friend.
Tete: Who?
D #2: Friend.
Tete: Well, what's her name?
D #2: I don't know.
Tete: How you can call her your friend if you don't even know her name?
D #2: (sighs) I played by myself.

Coffee

Hey did you make me some coffee?
I just gonna pour it.
But someone's gotta make it first.
You make it.
Why not you?
You big, I small.

I suppose that's true.

Halloween Ideas

Tėtė: What should I be for Halloween?
Daughter: Tėtė.
Tėtė: But I'm Tėtė every day.
Daughter: I don't know.
Tėtė: Don't you remember dressing up for Halloween?
Daughter: Yes.
Tėtė: So who should I be this time?
Daughter: Mama.

For Cereal

#2 doesn't know why the term for cereal is funny, but she knows it's some kind of joke.

"Tete, I wanna play with you."

"For cereal?"

*sigh* "Yes...for cereal."

Children...children...future...future...

I had one of those moments yesterday. Unfortunately, nobody though to bring me a beer (except for myself).

Piano/guitar recitals yesterday. #1 has been playing the piano for six months now. She was amazing. She played Tarantula.

The rest of the recital was just like Children...children...future...future...I was not able to sit through it to  the end. But let's back up to the beginning. (If anybody has a link to the Simpson's clip in English, I'd put it right up.)

Knowing what a mess the show would be, I called ahead to Verkiai Restaurant to confirm the sale of beer. When I get there, they say no, the kitchen's closed. I'm ordering beer here, not food, and two hours ago on the phone you told me no problem. Turns out there is a problem, they don't have a cash register (What?), so they can't take orders separate from the single event renting the premises/ordering some snacks and punch at the end of the ordeal. So, to get a beer they have to include it's price in the main order and charge the piano teacher, to whom I then have to give six lits in coins. Awesome.

And then they tap a new keg to pour me the one beer, which takes them about 25 minutes. Awesomer.

#1's performance was definitely the best. That doesn't mean she was the best pianist, but she did choose her song most wisely. The kids who are better than she chose songs that were too hard, or maybe their parents made them, but so they made mistakes. Some of my favorites, like Joplin's Ragtime, were destroyed. Each time I heard a song come on that I like I cringed, feeling the music march itself up to the gallows.

Looking around me, I knew that I was not alone. The rest of the parents shared my fate. There were four types of faces in the audience: yawning, eyes-shut, shit-eating-grin, and video camera. The last was one that each parent took his turn at when his kid went up. I took my turns at the first and third, doing my best not to let my face betray the horror I was feeling. I was even intent on sitting through it, golden rule and all. But after about 20 songs I volunteered to take #2 for a walk, because "she" was getting antsy.

And I thought to myself, after I'd escaped from musical hell, golden rule? Perhaps, in this bizarro world of disharmony, the golden rule is different. Maybe it's Every Man For Himself. So we'll see if I get over it before next year's concert (Oh God, please don't let them be more often than annual), but I think the best plan of action might be to bribe the teacher to let my kid (the talented one!) go first, and quietly take our leave immediately thereafter.

Note to parents: #2 was dramatically displeased not to receive any flowers, despite my insistence that she "did do anything to deserve flowers."

Monopoly

We played Monopoly with #1 for the first time ever. Here are my properties after the first time around the board. As usual, I won. And as always, somebody cried.

Although the box says 8+, I think you need to be a pretty patient 8 year old with an understanding of value to enjoy it through to the end.

Apron Styling

Made some banana bread with the kid, she goes "Čia Močiutei?" (This is for Grandma?)

Her job was to mix in the flour at the end, so she had to hold the wooden spoon for an extended period. Each time she dropped she yelled "Nesulaužiau!" (I didn't break it)

When I finally got the flour out she said "What's this?" Flour. "Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!"

She finally mixed if for a minute and her hand got tired. That's fine, do you wanna grease the pans? "No. Bet aš vistiek gražiai atrodau." (But I look nice anyway) Sure you do. Wait is that why you said you wanna help me, just so you can put on your apron? "Yes."

Reading

Phone call:

What's up?
Hi Tete.
What are you doing?
I'm just reading.
What are you reading?
That book I got from Santa Claus, Nina.
Nina Sharp, from Fringe?
No.
So what's it about?
I don't know.
What do you mean you don't know?
It's about alot of things, it's not just one part.
So tell me everything you know so far.
I don't know anything.
What do you mean, aren't you reading it?
Yeah but I don't know anything yet.
How can you know nothing? What's the first part about?
A black star.
Well what's the black star do? Is it bad, or good?
I don't know!
What did you read about it? Nothing?
I just got hungry.
So wait, you sat down to read, opened up the first chapter, saw that it's called Black Star, then took a break?
I didn't take a break I just got hungry.
You got hungry so you took a bread to eat, right?
Yes.
Alright, well good luck reading that book.

Christmas Food

Christmas Eve

Bagels with some homemade lox cream-cheese and onion bagels from America.

This year I decided to make two varieties of Christmas Cod:
the usual (Elona Vaišnienės recipe), and a spicy version.

Shrimp--good, but I think we got the wrong kinda shrimp.

 Special Lady's crab salad.

Herring, sour cream, and boiled potatoes.

Another kind of herring.

Two more kinds of herring, for a total of four herring dishes.

Šližikai

Christmas

The production of the BBQ Bacon Explosion. I was only have to get such a nice weave because of some excellent bacon I was very lucky to get at Druskos Namai, my favorite new restaurant in Vilnius.

The BBQ Bacon Explosion was excellent.

Home fries on the side.

BBQ sauce on the side.

Christmas II

Beef Stir Fry, with some excellent beef.

I also made some onion rolls to make sandwiches with leftover Explosion, which were great, but not photo worthy.

As you can see most dishes are made on the first day. On the second day you only need a few more because of all the leftovers, only a couple more on the third. I planned to make a chicken today two, but I barely got to the beef. Chicken is put off until tomorrow.

Bilingual Barrier Blasted to Bits

Until last week I had only instructed my youngun to speak English: when she spoke to me in Lithuanian, I would say, "speak English." I didn't see any functional difference between this and another method often used by parents rearing bilingual children, which replaces the instruction with mock misunderstanding/deafness: "I can't understand/hear you."

Boy was I wrong. Apparently, with a daughter as stubborn as mine, instruction will only take you so far (not very far).  She is happy indeed to disregard my instructions. But she is not happy to be ignored, oh hells no. I don't believe that she doesn't realize I do understand her completely all the time, but she's willing to play along with "I can't hear you." And after a week of this routine she's finally chiming in in English without being reminded.

So after three years of little progress, I've finally broken through. It was really frustrating after such lingual success with #1.

Christmas miracle? Thanks Jesus!

"Stop hitting yourself!"

Played "Stop hitting yourself!" with the little one this week, she thought it was pretty hilarious.

Radio Ga Ga

One of #2's favorite songs is Radio Ga Ga--she asks for it by name. I suspect that because it's the closest thing my YouTube playlist comes to Lady Gaga, who she has heard of. Lucky opportunity to learn her some classic rock.

Cribbage

Taught #1 to play cribbage last night (she's in 2nd grade now). She was winning for a while, after ridiculous beginners luck--she pegged a run on her first hand during the play ending with 31, when she didn't even know how to play. She had a run of four, A-2-3-4, and a ten was cut yielding an 8 point show for her.

I did throw away a pair into her crib once to allow me to keep a flush, so I could show her what a flush looks like. But there weren't many point I gave her like that, she was really winning. Until I got my double double run, 4-4-5-6-6, for 24.

I ended up one point short of skunking her, 120 to 91.

She kept saying "this game is like math," and I think Tetukas' advice was very good, that it will teach her to add faster, at least up to 31.
